MSc. Bioinformatics

About Master of Science in Bioinformatics

The MSc. Bioinformatics programme is currently supported by the East African Network Bionformatics Training (EANBiT) network with funding and support from the Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health (FIC-NIH, USA), the Initiative to Develop African Research Leaders (IDeAL) and the Human Health & Heredity in Africa (h3Africa.org).

This network consists of three universities: Pwani (PU, Kenya); Makerere (MU, Uganda) and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS, Tanzania) and four research institutions: International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe); KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP); Biosciences eastern and central Africa-International Livestock Research Institute (BecA-ILRI hub) and Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI).

Bioinformatics is a multidisciplinary field, and as such, is important to Life Sciences, including computing, agriculture, biology, microbiology, medicine, pharmacy and veterinary science. This program will provide students with competence in advanced theoretical and practical bioinformatics to prepare them for careers in academics, industry or the public sector. It emphasizes research creativity, innovation and responsiveness to the rapidly changing market demands and needs of the immediate society and beyond. It has been designed for students interested in academic research, biotechnology and the pharmaceutical and health care industries. Students will learn and collaborate with researchers from a range of disciplines related to bioinformatics. The program is of interest to those wishing to use cutting edge computational and/or laboratory approaches to address research problems in bioinformatics and related disciplines.
