About
Pwani University

Pwani University is located in Kilifi County, within the scenic coastal town of Kilifi, about 60 km north of Mombasa and adjacent to the Indian Ocean. The University occupies approximately 239 hectares of land, offering a serene environment for learning, research, and innovation.

Established on 23rd August 2007 as a constituent college of Kenyatta University, Pwani University was mandated to “provide quality education, training, research, and innovation for the advancement of the individual and society.” Guided by its Master Plan and a 10‑year Strategic Plan launched in 2010 (revised in 2014), the institution has steadily developed the infrastructure required to deliver quality degree programs. On 31st January 2013, Pwani University was officially granted a Charter, becoming a fully-fledged university. Today, it serves a vibrant student population of about 8,000.

Founded during a period of rapid change in higher education both in Kenya and globally, the University continues to embrace opportunities brought by Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). With a strong focus on Open, Distance, and e‑Learning (ODeL), Pwani University leverages emerging technologies to expand access, promote equity, and enhance the quality of education.

Currently, the University comprises seven Schools:

  • School of Agricultural Sciences and Agribusiness (SASA)
  • School of Business and Economics (SBE)
  • School of Education (SED)
  • School of Environmental and Earth Sciences (SEES)
  • School of Health and Human Sciences (SHHS)
  • School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS)
  • School of Pure and Applied Sciences (SPAS)

Pwani University remains committed to aligning its curriculum with industry needs and global advances in knowledge, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.
