Guidelines for Concepts Notes/Ideations of Innovations

Submissions to the conference and innovation expo should reflect the event’s transdisciplinary focus, demonstrating collaborative approaches that address and provide solutions to real-world societal challenges. Here submission can include showcases of projects with social innovations or activities that enhance the transdisciplinary approach.

Submissions can include written concepts (Maximum 300 words) or video concepts (1 Minutes long) explaining the prototypes, models, inventions, patents, modifications, and prior learning artifacts.

A preliminary review will be conducted by the conference committee to ensure that all submissions are relevant, complete, and aligned with the conference’s objectives.

Each submission shall then be evaluated by a panel of at least three expert reviewers and scored based on Innovation & Novelty, Functionality & Technical Execution

Impact & Relevance, Clarity of Concept & Story, and the Presentation & Engagement. Based on reviewer scores and a commitment to diversity, a select cohort of finalists will be chosen to showcase their work at the conference and innovation expo, with each receiving a five-minute presentation slot during the plenary session to tell the story behind their innovation, the problem, the process, and the potential impact, answer questions, and network with attendees.

The Concept note should have a format similar to the structure below:

The length should be a maximum of one minute pitch as per the sample below:

Rubric Criteria Addressed

0:00 - 0:15

The Hook & The Problem

"My name is Amara. I built the Safe Weave Loom because women in my village spend 6 hours a day hunched over, resulting in chronic back pain that ends their careers by age 40."

Hold up the prototype or a striking component. Point to the problem area (e.g., the user's back).

Impact & Relevance (Identifies real-world problem)

Clarity of Concept (Starts the story with conflict)

0:15 - 0:35

The Solution & Live Demo

"Traditional looms force a hunch [demonstrates with body]. My modification raises the warp beam [points to prototype] and uses a lever-action handle [pulls lever, model moves]. See? The weaver now sits upright, using leg power, not straining the spine."

Demonstrate the mechanical feature. Make the model move, flex, or show its key function. Point to the specific modification.

Functionality (Proves it works visually)

Innovation (Shows the new approach)

Technical Execution (Craftsmanship visible)

0:35 - 0:50

Impact & Differentiation

"This means a weaver can work 15 years longer pain-free. Unlike expensive ergonomic imports, this modification costs Kshs 80 made from recycled bicycle parts found in any local market."

Shift from prototype to eye contact. Use hands to emphasize contrast (imports vs. local).

Impact (Economic/social benefit stated)

Innovation (Unique modification highlighted)

Clarity (Value proposition delivered)

0:50 - 1:00

Vision, Sustainability & The Ask

"I have working prototypes in 5 homes. With 3 partner weavers and Kshs 2,000 for materials, we can train 50 women this year building backs, not breaking them. Thank you."

Open body language. Confident stance. Hold prototype up one final time as a symbol.

Presentation (Engages audience directly)

Impact (Scalability & sustainability implied)

Clarity (Ends with clear vision)
